Bummertime

We've got front steps, interior paint, and tile.

The paint is... yellow. When we first saw it, we thought surely there had been a mistake. We didn't expect "summertime" to be so... summery. Following a trip to the David Weekley Design Center and the Pittsburgh/Monarch paint store, we were certain it couldn't be the color we'd chosen. On the color swatch, summertime was a pleasant, light beige, cooler than some of the tans we'd picked up for comparison. Hold it up to the wall, and it disappears.

Looking at other houses currently under construction, the color we had envisioned summertime would be is "calumet" (not to be confused with Calumet). We've asked our sales consultant to price what it would take to repaint the house. But I don't think we're going to do it, given how much it likely will cost, especially since the tile floors have gone in.

In choosing what we thought was a light, neutral color, the idea was to have a backdrop for various accent walls and minimize the amount of painting we would feel compelled to do after the fact. As it is now, we may wind up repainting nearly every surface, ceilings included, before we move in. It's really depressing.

At least we are happy with the tile, even if the tile guys think I'm crazy!

Lines and Borders and Trim, Oh My!

Today, sidewalks down both sides of our house were poured. Near the front corner, it seems a rather large bird ran in a curving line, permanently memorialized in the hardening concrete.

The driveway was also poured. As soon as all the trim is out of the garage, we may have to see if both vehicles will fit, and just how little storage space we'll have left over. I think I need to buy a Mini.

Speaking of trim, it's all but finished. (The trim presently in the garage must be for another house in the block... ?) It looks nice!

Sheetrock and Cabinets

Quite a bit has happened over the past 10 days. The sheetrock was installed, taped and bedded, and textured. I'm glad Timothy talked me into the rounded corners - they look great!

On Thursday evening, our garage door had been installed. Inside the garage were all of our cabinets!

By lunchtime yesterday, the cabinets had been installed. Since then, the trim guys have been working on our stairs.

Fiberglass Subconscious

Surrealists rejected modern architecture's "overrationalized technological realism" and "right-angle past" in favor of the "soft tactile depths" and "umbilical cords" of "circular, spherical, and irregular houses." (Quotes by surrealists Tristan Tzara and Matta, and theorist Anthony Vidler, from Stephen Phillips's contribution to Surrealism and Architecture.)

For a short while, the womb-like subconscious of our house is exposed.

The soft, visceral id of the fiberglass is soon to be suppressed by the rigidity of the sheetrock ego. Perhaps when we go into the attic, our house will still dream.
